Parents of Bullitt County fifth grade students interested in attending The Discovery School will find a new application process.
Hebron Middle School Principal Kelland Garland said the biggest difference this year is that the application process is open to ANY interested 5th grader.
“We will have two Open Houses in February to allow students and their parents to come learn more about DS and the steps to apply,” he explained. “If students choose to apply, they will take a test at their elementary schools that will serve as a screener. If they make it past that, then they will move to the second step, which is an application packet, two writing prompts, and soliciting teacher recommendations.”
The pool will then be narrowed down to 50 students for interviews.
“From those 50, we will select the top 36 and invite them to become the next cohort in Discovery School,” Garland said.
The Discovery School is for grades sixth through eighth and offers specialized programs focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through Project-Based and Blended Learning.
The program is housed at Hebron Middle School. Teachers are Devin Franklin (Science), Kimberly Schraut (Math), Woody Zorn (Social Studies/English/Language Arts), Kim Minter and Ed Corum (Instructional Tutors).
