Bullitt Central High School Inducts 10 into 2018 Hall of Fame

BCHS 2018 Hall of Fame Inductees

Bullitt Central High School’s Hall of Fame grew by 10 individuals in 2018.

Calen Cook is a 2000 graduate who extended his experience as a senior cheerleader with GymTyme Allstars since 2002 where he serves as Gym Director. He has also worked as one of three Head Coaches for the University of Louisville cheerleading program. Since 2005, he has worked with various U of L squads that have won a total of 24 national titles.

For 40 years, Evelyn Douglas has been a fixture in a Bullitt Central classroom. She began as a math teacher in 1978 and retired in 2005 only to return in one year teaching the same subject. Since 2012, she has been working as the Flex School Coordinator helping the most at-risk students succeed.

Another lifelong educator and alumnae is Connie Hatfield (Class of 1981). She was a BCHS teacher from 1988-2004 followed by one year as a guidance counselor at Maryville Elementary School and the next 20 years as guidance counselor at North Bullitt High School. Since 2010, she has been an active member of the Kentucky and Southern Indiana Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and is also an avid marathon runner and bike rider.

Lisa Lewis (Class of 1988) remembers learning this in Sherry Reesor’s business class… “She taught me to pay attention to the details.” That technique has aided her in 25 years in the financial world serving as Vice President for PBI Bank and Republic Bank and Senior Vice President for Peoples Bank of Mt. Washington before becoming Director of Finance for Bullitt County Public Schools.

Katina Chesser Marathe (Class of 1993) earned an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point where she graduated in 1997 and then worked for the Corp of Engineers serving as an engineer platoon leader stationed in Panama overseeing the construction of schools in Dominica and Haiti. Katina currently works as a critical care nurse at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

Bullitt County Health Dept. Director Andrea Franklin Renfrow (Class of 1993) has a fun favorite memory. She and her twin sister, Angela, beat rival Bullitt East in the District Basketball Championship with her friend of 35 years, Jennifer Williams, cheering her on.

Individuals such as Betty Robey were vital to the success of Bullitt Central. She served as a substitute teacher for 27 years but among her greatest contributions was the formation of the Bullitt Central Booster Club with her husband, Bill, and 12 others. Every Friday night, the booster club would set up and tear down tents, carry water, run electricity, purchase supplies, etc. in order to sell concessions for the football, basketball and baseball games.

Brian Weber (Class of 1999) played baseball and was a member of the nationally recognized cheerleading squad. He worked with the Bullitt County Attorney’s office before establishing a practice in Louisville. In 2015, he founded the Dixie Law Group. His work has been recognized at the state and national level.

Rick Woods (Class of 1991) was elected by the Student Body as 1990 Basketball Homecoming King. Sports was not his chosen career as he participated in Future Business Leaders of America, earned an accounting degree from U of L and has become an equity partner with MCM CPA’s & Advisors.

Whitney Wurzel Hammett (Class of 2001) is best known by students visiting Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest as Ranger Whitney. She credits teacher Wilma Harper’s senior English class where her teachings led to her discovery of British romantic writers where she was immediately drawn to their bond with nature and enthralled with their abilities to convey natural processes, phenomena and observations with such eloquence.
